Chiropractic Care

As your child grows, they will participate in more activities. Whether joining a sports team or taking up a new hobby, physical activity is essential for keeping kids healthy and fit. Yet, more time spent active increases the risk of injury. One way to keep your child performing their best is by seeing our pediatric chiropractor at Lifetime Family Health Center in Grapevine, TX.

Injuries Treated by Our Pediatric Chiropractor

Young athletes are susceptible to several types of injuries, including:

Back Pain

Activities that require repetitive motions or put stress on the back, such as baseball, softball, and gymnastics, can lead to back pain. In addition, back pain in children is often caused by subluxations, which are misalignments in the spine that can cause nerve compression and interfere with normal function.

Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is another common complaint among young athletes. In addition, trauma or poor mechanics when throwing a ball can cause pain from overuse.

Elbow Pain

Elbow pain is often seen in children who play tennis or baseball and is usually the result of overuse.

Knee Pain

Knee pain is a common complaint in young athletes, particularly those participating in running or jumping activities. Different conditions, such as patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), Osgood-Schlatter disease, and tendonitis, can cause knee pain.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help?

A young athlete with a sports injury can benefit from chiropractic care in several ways, including:

  • Reduced inflammation
  • Improved range of motion
  • Reduced pain
  • Enhanced healing

Chiropractic Treatment for Young Athletes

The treatment your child receives is based on their specific injury. Some common chiropractic treatments used to treat young athletes include:

Manual Manipulations

These gentle adjustments are used to realign the spine and improve the range of motion. They involve minimal force and are often used to treat back pain, neck pain, and headaches.

Trigger Point Therapy

This type of massage releases muscle knots that can cause pain. It is often used to treat shoulder, elbow, and knee pain. It involves applying pressure to the trigger points in the muscle to reduce pain and tension.

Rehabilitative Exercises

These exercises are designed to strengthen the muscles and improve the range of motion. They are often combined with other treatments, such as manual manipulations and trigger point therapy.

Corrective Exercises

Corrective exercises are the use of bodily movements and/or postures to restore desirable changes in diseased or injured tissues. The corrective exercises are movement strategies that minimize or eliminate compensation. Corrective exercises should precede more integrated exercises, because they can cue the patient’s motor system to respond in a more desirable way and assist in removing or improving biomechanical constraints.

Kinesio Taping Grapevine, TX

Kinesio Taping

Using adhesives as a way to brace and support muscles and joints has long been a staple of physical therapy. Ankle taping is commonly used to reduce the strain on the ligaments while aiding in the prevention of further injuries. Stemming from this usage, Dr. Kenzo Kase developed Kinesio taping in the 1970s as a way to support the body’s natural healing mechanisms both during training and recovery. Tarrant County residents in Grapevine, Southlake, Colleyville, and other neighboring towns can access the benefits of this form of therapy at Lifetime Family Health Center.

What Is Kinesio Taping?

Kinesio taping goes beyond the basics of supportive adhesive bracing. Using knowledge of the underlying musculoskeletal structure and lymphatic system, our practitioner applies the tape in a way that provides targeted relief to injured locations. The method reduces inflammation in the muscles, provides relief to ligaments and tendons, and improves the functions of the lymphatic and circulatory systems.

Benefits of Kinesio Taping

Trials have shown that Kinesio taping can improve flexibility, reduce pain, and ease other joint and muscle pain symptoms when used as a part of restorative therapy. The benefits of Kinesio taping can be improved with a combination of a skilled chiropractor, high-quality tapes, and hands-on adjustments.

Rocktape is a company that produces a high-quality form of Kinesio tape with a stronger adhesive, better elasticity, and a more durable construction than other tapes. The enhanced capabilities of Rocktape allow our skilled Kinesio taping practitioner to better alleviate the tension and inflammation in the underlying joints. Rocktape also manufactures two creams designed to work with its main product. Both can be applied after the tape is in place without damaging the structural integrity of the adhesive, sending a relieving burn or soothing chill into the muscles.

Massage Therapy FAQs

Does Massage Therapy Help with Injuries?

Yes, if you have been injured, your tissues need all the assistance they can get to make a full recovery and feel better. Chiropractors will recommend massage therapy to help promote blood flow to the area that has been injured, reduce scar tissue and speed the healing process. Massage therapy provides the site of injury with the nutrients it needs to heal quickly. It also decreases swelling and inflammation to ease your pain.

How Can Massage Therapy Help Athletes?

If you have suffered a sports injury, a sports massage can help you recover quickly and efficiently. Sports massage helps to loosen up your muscles and other tissues for optimal sports performance and reduces the possibility of chronic scar tissue that will lead to reinjury and nagging symptoms.

How Do Massages Help with Chronic Pain?

Deep tissue massage can help loosen muscle knots and break up scar tissue. This is a common issue seen in injuries that result in impaired mobility. Trigger point therapy and deep tissue massage can also alleviate muscle knots due to conditions such as fibromyalgia. Since massage therapy promotes blood flow to the injured areas, it can reduce degenerative joint pain.

Is Massage Therapy Painful?

The goal of massage therapy is to relieve pain and ease discomfort. However, it is not uncommon to feel temporary discomfort at the beginning with certain deep tissue massage techniques. However, any discomfort should soon give way to a pleasant feeling of relaxation. Our chiropractor and massage therapists will assess your condition to determine the massage therapy techniques that will benefit you the most.

Why Do Some Chiropractic Clinics Offer Massage Therapy?

Chiropractors may implement massage and other non-invasive healing techniques because they enhance the benefits patients receive from spinal adjustments. Massage therapy also makes spinal adjustment sessions more efficient since the muscles will be relaxed and loose to help speed up healing. Be prepared for a combination of strategies to improve your overall health.

Your Child’s Chiropractor Can Help Ease the Pain and Discomfort of Many Health Concerns

It also aids in digestion and soothes sleep disturbances by targeting misaligned vertebrae that affect a child’s neuro musculoskeletal system. Furthermore, when a child has experienced trauma that has affected the alignment of their spine, chiropractic adjustments can correct the imbalance and return them to a state of optimal health.

Like everyone else, kids are now often over-stressed. This stress starts with trauma from birth. Events such as a c-section, birth intervention, and intrauterine constraints can affect a baby’s body. Children, along with the rest of the family, are also exposed to chemical stresses ranging from antibiotics to medication to poor diets. Emotional stresses can further affect musculature by the constant tensing of muscles that can then have a negative impact on spinal health.

Not only does chiropractic care benefit the spine and help to reduce pain and discomfort, but it can have a fantastic effect on a child’s neural brain development by releasing pressure on joints, bones, and the spine. Doctor Harrison also works with your child’s nutrition and Omega 3 fatty acid levels to Increase brain development enhance your child’s concentration. Thus, it can improve focus and mood, and reduce hyperactivity, helping with ADHD and behavioral problems as hyperactivity is reduced.

Cupping

Cupping therapy has become a popular alternative form of treatment in the United States. This ancient form of therapy originated in China. It involves placing heating cups on the skin and creating suction. If you live in Grapevine, Southlake, Colleyville, or the surrounding areas, contact our team at Lifetime Family Health Center to learn more about this treatment.

What Is Cupping?

During a cupping treatment, a cup is placed on your skin, and a vacuum draws the skin and muscle upward into the cup. Suction from cupping draws fluid into the treatment area.

The cups are placed on your skin for up to 10 to 15 minutes. They may stay in place for that entire time, or we may move them along the muscle or onto another location of your body.

The Benefits of Cupping

Cupping is often used to promote blood flow and healing. It has been used extensively to treat sore muscles. Cupping has also been used for:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis
  • Knee arthritis
  • Facial paralysis
  • Coughs and dyspnea
  • Lumbar disc herniations
  • Breathing problems, such as asthma
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Headaches and migraines

If you have any of these conditions and are interested in exploring this all-natural form of treatment, our team at Lifetime Family Health Center can tell you more about cupping and explore additional treatment options.

The Risks

According to medical professionals, there are no known risks involved with cupping. However, you may feel slightly dizzy during the treatment or experience nausea or sweating. The treatment can leave bruising or circular discolorations on the skin where the cupping takes place. These will fade within days or weeks after the procedure.

It is normal for the areas to be a little tender to the touch afterward. The tenderness should last only about 48 hours if the patient drinks plenty of water. Water helps with circulation and re-hydrating your muscles. You should not undergo the treatment if you currently have a sunburn, a wound, skin ulcer, or have experienced a recent trauma or internal organ disorder.

Contact Lifetime Family Health Center for Cupping Therapy

If you live in or around Grapevine, Southlake, or Colleyville, and you’re interested in cupping, call our team today at (817) 835-9009 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Harrison.
